A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
