Heartbreak and Candor The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew. The lyrics detail endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be. "That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'." The group topped a prestigious breakthrough survey in 2013, and have later scored four chart-topping albums. Development of Music That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before. For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums. "The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound." I Quit hones the band's characteristic style, mixing guitar-driven rock with contemporary rhythms and hooky pop hooks. Stories and Shared Humor The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories. One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight. "When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic." The group just finished a lengthy tour, but state they aim to perform live in the coming years. A Confident Legacy You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon. They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following. Yet Haim will always be their number one commitment. "My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
