Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
