The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by one point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before sprint qualifying due at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda slid over the track edges before sliding over the escape zone, and was fortunate to escape with just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the very end of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the last turn on to the main straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
