The star has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the Britain's independent music venues.

He was awarded the prize on 16 October as his new release People Watching was named the top album of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous small stages across the UK.

The donation assisted venues that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted musicians and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

In recent years, they gave their funds to the community center that supported their act, in addition to other local music groups.

Additionally 1994 winners they gave their prize to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," said artist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the cherry, because we had the cake. So our winning affected another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in the city were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
