Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
