Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
